Washington, DC – Stone’s Throw Foods, a gluten-free breakfast brand based in Washington, DC announced the acquisition of Swapples, a gluten-free waffle brand. The acquisition was finalized in May. This new product line provides Stone’s Throw Foods with an opportunity to expand their consumer base in the gluten free and paleo friendly breakfast category.
Swapples founder, Rebecca Brown, was looking to focus time on her own career and personal life, and Stone’s Throw Foods was eager to explore the opportunity to bring Swapples into their gluten-free breakfast business as a longtime fan. “[Rebecca] came up with the best plant based waffle I have ever tasted. By 'swapping' out processed sugars and grain-based flours for whole yuca root and natural sweeteners, Swapples is a delicious gluten free, paleo friendly, vegan waffle great for breakfast, snacks or even a light dessert” Ben James, founder of Stone's Throw Foods says.
“Swapples' standards for quality and clean ingredients fit perfectly into what Stone's Throw Foods is all about. Gluten Free and Paleo Friendly are two key traits Stone's Throw Foods focuses on. Lastly although yuca is not sourced domestically in the U.S., Swapples offer an opportunity to broaden our impact with sustainable food contributions. We will continue to give 1% to regional and local farming initiatives with Stone's Throw Foods and will look for ways to support yuca farmers as well.”
Stone’s Throw Foods has seen tremendous growth in the last year, working with new distribution partners like KeHe and participating in UNFI Next’s program that identifies up and coming CPG brands. Stone’s Throw Foods will also increase production capacity in an upcoming move to Union Kitchen’s new manufacturing facility in northeast Washington, DC.
The acquisition of Swapples will provide Stone’s Throw Foods opportunities to take a successful product line and expand distribution strategically to reach more consumers nationally. As Stone’s Throw Foods will move Swapples manufacturing in house, the brand will maintain the gluten-free certification and commitment to clean label products. In the future, the company eyes product expansion to gluten free lunch, dinner, and snacks.
